Rational science

Climate has now become the intersection and focal point of energy policies, transportation policies, water policies, land use and resource management polices. Climate considerations pervasively influence political processes throughout the world without regard for unintended consequences. With permission of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists we present the paper “Geological Perspectives of Global Climate Change: Introduction and Overview” which can serve as a primer for any rational consideration of global climate change. In Modeling Climate correctly we explore the immediate need to create a conceptual model of Climate as a dynamic General System.

Today the amended Endangered Species Act (ESA) no longer stands as the beacon of environmental responsibility it was intended to be. Whether the ESA is viewed as the club of choice to bludgeon those who would develop land or resources, or the ultimate protection for plants and animals against the unbridled destruction of their habitat depends on the point of view of the observer in any particular controversy (Baur and Irvin, 2002). One thing is clear, however, the ESA has contributed greatly to the acrimony between environmental preservationists and resource users. Protecting biodiversity should unite people rather than divide them.
