Artificial Intelligence is Forcing Public Education to Change

Public education must adapt because artificial intelligence has fundamentally changed how students learn.

Educators, legislators, and school administrators continue asking how to prevent students from using artificial intelligence.

They are asking the wrong question.

The question is how to educate students in a world where every student with a smartphone has immediate access to artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence did not merely introduce another educational tool. It also changed the nature of learning itself. When artificial intelligence can explain algebra, summarize history, translate foreign languages, and critique an essay within seconds, the central question is how the student thinks about and processes the information artificial intelligence produced.

Can the student distinguish evidence from assertion?

Can the student recognize weak reasoning?

Can the student evaluate competing explanations?

Can the student identify bias, uncertainty, and unsupported conclusions?

Can the student exercise sound judgment?

Those questions cannot be answered until Americans decide what the goals of public education should be.
