When Artificial Intelligence Becomes the Teacher

The first explanation a student receives increasingly comes from artificial intelligence rather than the classroom teacher.

Artificial intelligence is quietly replacing the teacher. Public education is just beginning to understand the consequences.

For centuries, education meant students learning from teachers. The essential task of teachers is transforming information into knowledge and knowledge into judgment.

For millions of students, artificial intelligence has become the first teacher they consult.

The first explanation a student receives often becomes the one that shapes every explanation that follows. Whoever provides that first explanation has enormous influence over how the student thinks about the subject. For generations, that was the teacher. Increasingly, it is artificial intelligence. That does not diminish the importance of teachers. It redefines their mission.

A teacher recognizes confusion. A teacher detects misunderstanding. A teacher challenges weak reasoning. A teacher develops intellectual discipline. A teacher teaches students to distinguish evidence from assertion, knowledge from opinion, and understanding from memorization.

Artificial intelligence can provide information, but only a teacher can help students learn what information deserves to be believed, what evidence deserves confidence, and what conclusions deserve acceptance.

That is the difference between information and knowledge.

The teacher no longer controls the flow of information. Artificial intelligence and the Internet do. The role of the teacher must change. The mission of the public school must change.

Information has become a commodity. Judgment has not.

The purpose of education is developing judgment, reasoning, intellectual independence, and the wisdom to use artificial intelligence without becoming dependent upon it.

The schools that recognize this reality will prepare students for the future. The schools that do not will prepare them for the past.

Artificial intelligence is not replacing the teacher. It is redefining the teacher.

Good teachers have never been more important.
